For Baptist Community Services, a major project to upgrade to a SharePoint intranet was like climbing Mount Everest. Safely atop the peak, IT Applications Manager Arvee Manaog and Senior Systems Analyst Kusal Wijewantha reflected on the epic journey at the Australia SharePoint Conference 2011.

Baptist Community Services is a leading not-for-profit Christian care organisation that has been serving the aged and people living with disabilities for the past 65 years.

With an annual turnover of $200 million, it presently has over 3700 staff and more than 1000 volunteers operating at 70 sites across NSW and the ACT. This includes 2500 computer users.

SharePoint 2007 was chosen in 2009 to form the basis of a completely redesigned intranet, the project was completed in 15 months.

The United States Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the country’s largest integrated health care system. Over 53,000 independent licensed health care professionals practice throughout 153 medical centers, numerous community-based outpatient clinics, as well as community living centers and Vet Centers. The VHA offers hospital-based surgical and critical care services, as well as specialty services such as audiology and speech pathology, dermatology, dental, oncology, prosthetics, and vision care.

And the quality of that care has been called out for its excellence. Numerous independent studies conducted since the late 1990s have found that the VHA delivers better care than the nation’s private sector medical facilities. The VHA is also on the cutting edge of electronic medical record (EMR) technology. It has developed a low-cost open source EMR system
called Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) which has been credited with reducing common medication dispensing errors and allowing practitioners to access patient records more quickly and easily.

That said, with over 5.5 million U.S. veterans receiving health care from the VHA every year, it’s no surprise that complaints or questions do arise from time to time. These inquiries are fielded by the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Office of the Medical Inspector (OMI).

Developing and introducing a new drug to the market is a lengthy and very expensive process. The development process adopted by pharmaceutical companies initially involves identifying an active compound, checking effectiveness and safety, and determining the correct dosage.

After clearing these hurdles, a potential drug then undergoes laboratory and clinical trials before entering the market. The world’s government-appointed medical institutions responsible for drug approval only endorse a small fraction of all the compounds investigated for human use. Therefore, to avoid risk of non-compliance with regulatory authorities, rigorous records management is essential during the development lifecycle and after a drug enters the market.

Restored records help parishioners rebuild their lives; HP TRIM software ensures future continuity, security of records. “Our HP TRIM software played a vital role in our efforts to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. It helped us make documents—including those people need to replace the IDs, driver’s licenses, and other important records they lost in the disaster—once again accessible to the public.” —Emilie Gagnet Leumas, PhD, CA, Director of Archives and Records, Archdiocese of New Orleans (Contains 1 attachments.)
